I would just recommend taking that money and buying a different shoe, one that fits wider to begin with. If you go up that extra size to fit the width, you start having too much space in the toe/heel and then you start losing the lockdown the shoe is trying to give you. The shoe was built to be king of the euro-step, quick stops and side-to-side movement. Reason being, you’re basically paying the CAD$165 (AUD$170) for the lateral support, and nothing else.

You could go up half a size if you’re determined to buy this shoe, but I honestly wouldn’t recommend it if you’re paying full price.

The reason is lateral stability, which this shoe has in spades, but it will be a tough job for wide-footers to get in.

The width is decent in the toe box, a comfortable amount of space, but incredibly narrow in the mid-foot. To the point that the laces were almost too short to tie up. That being said, I would not recommend a translucent outsole for outdoor play such as the “Black Panther” colourway (Nike calls it Dusty Amethyst, but COME ON, it’s Black Panther all the way!).įor me, the Zoom Freak 2 fit better than almost anything. For months on end it kept doing its thing, when other Nike offerings tend to last hours, weeks at best. My pair of the “Naija” colourway came complete with a solid black rubber outsole, and it held up beautifully outdoors. Nike has ignored outdoor play as of late, and the durability across the entire line can only be described as abysmal. Dusty courts may require a wipe every now and then, but even in the dustiest setting they held up for me. Every quick stop, change of direction and spin move comes with a confidence only provided by footwear that grips perfectly every time, allowing you the benefit of not having to think about it. No matter what you’re doing, the bite is consistent. All of these shoes have a real nice grip in their own right, so perhaps the Freak 2 would as well! The nubs reminded me of the Nike Kyrie Low 2 and the Jordan Why Not Zer0.3 while the circular pattern took me back to the Air Force 1 and Jordan 1. Although, flipping over the Zoom Freak 2, I was pleasantly surprised!Īn updated traction pattern in the forefoot gave me some hope. The “Rose” pattern was pretty, but gave you nothing on a dirty court. The black-and-white color way will follow on August 7.When it comes to traction, I had very little hope, given how useless the Zoom Freak 1 was. The Nike Zoom Freak 2 will launch in a green-and-white color way-dubbed Naija in a nod to the Greek Freak’s Nigerian heritage-on July 25 on and at select retailers. The shoe shouldn’t restrict him, but help him move as naturally as possible, Klein added. The shoe offers more containment, holding the foot in place securely, but opens up at the point where Antetokounmpo’s foot requires greater range of movement. To combat this, Nike reworked the shoe’s boundary zone-or the area from the second eyelet to the bottom of the throat. “When athletes like Giannis produce so much pressure through their movement, the foot naturally wants to slide out of the footbed,” Klein said.

The shoe also helps give Antetokounmpo dynamism on the court through its upper construction, allowing his foot to bend and flex in critical areas. “For the Freak 2, we shifted our attention to more planes of movement, because Giannis can command every spot on the floor.” “In the Freak 1, we focused on how frequently Giannis gets vertical for rebounds, blocks and dunks,” Klein said. The shoe’s forefoot includes Zoom air cushioning and a soft, lightweight foam in the heel, Nike said, providing support for Antetokounmpo’s “tremendous physical force.” According to Nike, the shoe is designed to help facilitate fluid movement, control his quickness and provide support throughout a fast-paced game. “What’s different about his movements is that he’s causing so much pressure when he hits those steps, like the Eurostep, that we need to help propel him and contain him further near the toe.”Īntetokounmpo’s 6’11 frame allows him to speed across the court in just a few strides. “What Giannis does in space is directly connected to his body proportions,” Ross Klein, senior creative director for Nike Basketball, said. With multiple color ways dropping on July 25 and August 7, the Zoom Freak 2 sneaker was created to support the NBA player’s most iconic moves on the court, the brand said, making his strategy even more effective.Īntetokounmpo is known for his Eurostep, a fake-out tactic in which a player takes a step in one direction and then a quick step in the opposite direction in order to evade a defender and make a play for the basket, Nike said in a statement. Following the success of the Zoom Freak 1, Nike has unveiled its second signature shoe built on the unique athletic prowess of Milwaukee Bucks MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.
